There are plenty of things that people have to deal with that can make life difficult; a cold that comes on in a moments notice, a debilitating head ache that blindsides you and makes it difficult to do anything else and more. However, one thing that can literally wreak havoc on a person is having to deal with the onset and occurrence of panic attacks. If you have spent a lot of time looking for self help for panic attacks, then you probably think that you have tried everything. In all likelihood you have tried the traditional methods of controlling your panic, such as meditation and medications, with varying degrees of success. However, these methods of self help for panic attacks don’t always work, which can lead to a certain amount of despair.
The fact is that these attacks can come on in a moments notice and they can happen to just about anyone at any age at any time. Usually it is response to a perceived danger or the body’s reaction to something unpleasant. Symptoms of a panic attack can range from chest pains and trouble breathing to something minor like nervousness and hot flashes. In fact, in many cases, panic attacks can often be mistaken for heart attacks. Another method that you should consider trying is distraction. An interesting form of distraction is by holding ice in your hands or dipping your hands in ice water. The shock of the cold may cause you to snap out of your panic and focus on controlling it.
Another form of distraction is to pop balloons. This may seem odd, but some people find that if they name the problem, such as confrontation, and write it on the balloon and then pop it, they can gain some control over the issue. If a particular person causes your panic attacks to flare up, then write their name or draw their picture on the balloon and then pop it with a pin.
For the balloon method, you need to have balloons prepared in advance. Each morning blow up one or two balloons and have them there, just in case. That way you won’t have to attempt to create the scenario during a panic attack.
If you can understand why you are experiencing the panic attack you can often times cut it off at the pass. Sometimes it might happen without warning, but in some cases the panic attack is a response to a situation or certain feelings. By recognizing those feelings and situations you can push back by staying away from those situations that cause you to panic and you can combat those negative feelings with positive ones.
If you believe in God, then prayer may help you through your panic attack. While you may not find this in any self help for panic attacks books, some people agree that prayer works quite well for panic attacks. A therapist might suggest that this is simply another form of meditation, but if it works, why argue semantics.
The key is to keep trying until you find the method that offers you the control over your panic attacks that you need. Finding the right self help for panic attacks might take time; however, don’t get discouraged if a method that works for someone else doesn’t work for you, just keep trying!
